 Trends You Should Know

  • August 26 marks Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the 1920 passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution, giving women the right to vote. Did you know that women earn only 82 cents for every dollar a man earns? Much effort has been made in women’s equality, as women made only 57 cents per dollar earned by men in 1973, but there is still much work to be done.
  • A sealed copy of NES Legend of Zelda was recently donated to a Goodwill store in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Goodwill listed this item on its auction platform and the bidding wars quickly ensued. A video game collector and dentist in Florida won the auction at a final price of $411,278! The Zelda game is the most expensive item ever sold on Goodwill’s website, which has been in existence since 1999. Let this serve as a reminder to the age-old saying, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”
  • The 2021 Paralympic Games begin this week, and Facebook is jumping in on the action! The social media giant announced that it will be adding a new range of tools for users to stay up-to-date on all the events. A new Paralympics hub is rolling out to provide up-to-the-minute information on results and highlights. This hub will include athlete and team profiles and an interactive Games element to maximize engagement. Facebook’s Paralympic Games hub will be available today by tapping on the #Paralympics hashtag. Meanwhile, on Instagram, the Paralympics account is sharing content that explains the history and rules behind different Paralympic events. For example, did you know that in Wheelchair Basketball, the basket is over three meters from the floor? Check out @Paralympics on Instagram for more event rules and history.
  • Tropical Storm Henri barreled through the Northeast this weekend leaving more than 100,000 homes without power. The strong winds took down trees and power lines, and the storm surge flooded streets.  Henri has now weakened to a tropical depression, but the threat of flooding in the Northeast remains with more than 33 million under flood alert.

Thanks for reviewing the latest happenings and trends with us, and we look forward to meeting you back here on the blog next week.
